Stacking The Shelves| March 22

Stacking the Shelves, hosted by Reading Reality, is a weekly feature about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, whether physical or virtual. You can include books you buy in physical stores or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and, of course, ebooks!

Hello! There. Looking forward to discovering more new books from all the participants.

I added these books to my shelf this week without knowing what they were about. I buy books based on covers and intuition because I always get disappointed when I buy whatever is on everybody's most recommended list. Somehow, when I finally read what everyone is raving about I end up not liking it at all. Examples are the following: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern among others. It is disheartening but at the same time very liberating to put down a book and not finish it when it's not working for me. That's why I love to participate again in Stacking The Shelves. I love to discover new books by their covers.

My initial plan is to read only two books this month as my family is currently going through a life transition and reading time is limited. I started reading Kate and Clara's Curious Cornish Craft Shop (I'm such a sucker for small-town/village plots) and I love the flow of the storyline so far. Then, when my favorite second-hand online bookshop finally had another copy of The Help, I bought it immediately and dismissed my intuition. I've been seeing this book on everyone's list for years and got intrigued enough to consider this might be different.

Well, the book is written with an accent. I know it is a literary device to convey one character's background but the reality is, it distracts me big time. It's hard to imagine the scenarios in my head and at the same time understand each word, and how it was used, or when its used.

I felt bad and asked my husband for his insight about it. Told him that I had been intrigued by this book for the longest time but now that I finally have the chance, something hindered me from enjoying the story. He told me, to give it a chance. As of this writing, I'm still thinking about what my hubby told me.

The Maid, on the other hand, was chosen last night because when my niece played in our room yesterday, our things got scattered everywhere from their original place. The Kate and Clara's Curious Cornish Craft Shop book, which I remember to be in our bed was missing and nowhere to be found. I'm already 65% done and the climax of the story is almost there. I give up searching and just hope that it will appear when I'm not looking for it. Today, I saw it beside my laptop. So relieved to find it. The maid is okay so far. :)

  1. That's definitely one of the things I'm not sure about re: reading The Help -- though there are a lot of critiques out there, too. For me, if I'm not having fun, it's probably time to move on, with few exceptions -- I read for fun, not homework!

Hope you find some books you enjoy more, either way!
