HOW HARD IS IT FOR ME TO DITCH A BOOK?

When I turned 40, (many years ago) I noticed that my tolerance for things became short. Especially with the books I'm reading. I no longer have the ability or capacity to focus when the story is going nowhere. My parameter is Chapter 5. When a story does not push through this chapter I need (without guilt) to ditch the book. I'm thinking, I still have tons of books on my bookshelf. If I ditch this now, I might discover a really really good book and be happy to finish it in a flash. I don't want to be stuck and feel bad. I want to move on and continue reading other books.

These two books in particular, to me looks like a good read because I'm a sucker for books with food as the main character. But it didn't feel right. There is something about these books that I can't pinpoint in the beginning. It's like I'm feeling a bad vibe about the author/s. But believe me, the idea of these books makes me want to read them until the end. As I've said, it "looks" like a good read. I had to debate with myself about maybe I could let it slide and just finish it. I didn't win the debate.

Before ditching it, I asked Google and read a couple of reviews and other news articles. Well, my intuition was correct. Something was going on with the authors in real life. Not that their personal life matters to me, but as someone who read between the lines, I noticed that in the book. How they describe situations, how they use words, and how they sound while I read their words in my head. It projects a character that is unpleasant to read. In the end, It didn't sit well with me. I let go and just moved on.

  1. Oh, I totally agree. I have no guilt or shame in ditching a book and DNFing it! Like you said, the older we get, the less bulshit we take, lol, to put it bluntly. If a book doesn't work for me, just leave it and get on with the next one, life is too short for mediocre stories :)
